Aristaios, the beekeeping God

Αρισταίος (Aristaios – Aristaeus), a god in Greek mythology, was the son of god Apollo and the huntress Cyrene. When Aristaios was born, Pindar sang and god Hermes took him to Gaia to be raised on nectar and ambrosia in order to become immortal. While growing up the Myrtle-nymphs taught him how to tame the goddess's bees and keep them in hives… that he in turn taught the ancient Greeks, thus he became the patron god of beekeeping… glorified by mankind.

The Museum of Ancient Beekeeping (Senovinės bitininkystės muziejus) in Stripeikiai, (Aukštaitija National Park) Lithuania

Established in 1984 the museum hosts over 500 exhibits, which are located both indoors and outdoors illustrating traditions, mythology and history of beekeeping in Lithuania.

The honeybee is a symbol of friendship in Lithuania, synonym of the word “friend” (draugas) is “bičiulis” and it is derived from the word bee (bitė). At the 15th of August each year a fest is held called “Medkopio šventė”
Visitors are welcomed from May to October Tuesday-Sunday, 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Tomb of Pabasa

Tomb of Pabasa, El Assasif, Egypt c. 664-610 BC

Pabasa was a high official who held the titles “Chief Steward of the God’s Wife Nitocris” under the reign of the Psamtek I (26th Dynasty) in the Late Pharaonic Period (c. 664-610 BC). He had his large mud-brick tomb built at El Assasif. The above finely carved relief is a rare beekeeping scene from one of the columns in the sun court.

The Tacuinum Sanitatis is a medieval handbook on wellness, based on the Taqwim al-sihha ("Maintenance of Health"), an 11th-century Arab medical treatise by Ibn Butlan of Baghdad, the manuscripts of which are characteristically illustrated.

"Man of Bicor" Cueva de la Arana, Valencia, Spain c. 15000 BC

This rock painting called the "Man of Bicorp" was discovered in 1921 in the Cueva de la Arana (Spider Cave) in Valencia, Spain. The painting depicts a human figure near a cavity where there is a beehive. Hanging on three lianes, he is picking up honeycombs, while nearby are some stylized bees. The painting is believed to be over 15000 years old and dates back to the end of the Paleolithic Period
